New River Inlet - Hurricane Florence - Before/After

Hurricane Florence was said to be “The Storm of a Lifetime”. With that being said it had a major impact on the South East Coast of North Carolina. Just before the storm came a shore we went out to several different locations on Topsail Island including New River Inlet and documented what the beach looked like before the storm Sept. 12th, 2018. On Sept 26t, 2018 we were granted access to North Topsail Beach to access the damage caused by the storm. New River Inlet is vital for many local fisherman as well as the Military aboard Camp LeJune. They use this inlet on a daily basis. In previous years the inlet has been very difficult to navigate as it has not been dredged in years. It appears from these aerial shots it seems the hurricane had a little effect on the inlet. If anything it looks like the storm washed some of the sand out of the inlet and made it deeper. On the day we shot the before shots the ocean had a fairly small swell running about 2ft at 14 sec. On the day we shot the after shots there was a much larger swell that was about 5ft at 13 sec. We noticed that the outer sandbar on the Inlet was not breaking so the water depth could be deeper than before the storm but the only way to tell for sure is to go out and check it with a boat.

New Topsail Inlet Before Hurricane Florence - Aerial Virtual Tour

This morning we shot all over Topsail Island, NC documenting what the island looks like before Hurricane Florence from the air. This is one of our favorite aerial virtual tours that we shot today. Over the past 15 years Topsail Island has grown substantially and most people don’t realize the destruction that Hurricanes can do to an island. We plan on going back to all the locations that we shot this morning in the wake of the storm to give perspective of what the damage is. We shoot thousands of properties each year on Topsail and this new technology in 3D virtual tours is going to help enhance it!

Below is an image that we took this morning to show a good before and after. The (Top) image was taken after Hurricane Fran in Sept 1996 and the (Bottom) we shot this morning as people were just finishing boarding up. Take notice to the circular house in the middle as a point of reference. This house and a few around it are still there today. Hurricane Fran was a Cat 3 Hurricane with a 12ft storm surge. Hurricane Florence is a Cat 3 right now with an expected 12ft+++ storm surge! It will be interesting to see how this little piece of paradise that we love handles this storm.

Rich Inlet and Figure 8 Island's Proposed Terminal Groin

The Homeowners Association of Figure 8 Island have proposed a terminal groin to be placed on the northern tip of their home island. As displayed in the image above by UMD photographer and owner Adam Hawley, the proposed groin, constructed from rock and concrete sheets, will stretch from the sound side of the island, border the northernmost homes and continue across the beach and into the Atlantic Ocean. The groin itself will be roughly 1/4 mile long and would be one of the first hardened structures on the Carolina coast in many years. 

In comparison and as displayed in the video below, Masonboro Inlet is a prime example of the hardened structure some Figure 8 Island residents would like to have installed. The idea behind the groin would be for any potential coastal erosion to cease on the northern tip of the island. With such a massive, virtually immovable structure, the majority of sand immediately south of the groin would remain intact and most likely unobstructed or unfazed by natural weather and surf. Ultimately, some members of the Homeowners Association of Figure 8 desire the groin and the idea of less erosion because of how close many homes currently rest in proximity to live water and subsequent weather. 

This groin would also affect the Rich Inlet, one of last natural flowing, meaning never-dredged, inlets on our coastline. This facet of the proposed construction is a difficult one to face from the perspective of the NC Coastal Foundation. Their video demonstrates several view points on the intricacies of Rich Inlet and its coinciding estuaries, preserves, waterways and wildlife environments. One interesting portion of the video shows photographs of Rich Inlet over a few decades, depicting how little the inlet has shifted over the years. In terms of the inlet's ebb and flow, their roundabout argument rests in the classic, if ain't broke don't fix it, mindset. While the NC Coastal Federation discusses a great deal of insights on the proposed project, well beyond just the basic facts of the inlet, the bottom line is real estate - if the groin is constructed, current and future homes will be affected; if the groin is not constructed, current and future homes will be affected. So, the question of construction remains. 

 There's certainly a great deal at stake - from the homes of humans, to the homes of wildlife; natural landscapes and ongoing debates. Examine UMD's photo, check out the video, and leave your comments below; we'd love to hear your thoughts.

Surf City, NC - Before and After Hurricane Joaquin

As Hurricane Joaquin drifted past the coast of North Carolina it left its mark without even making landfall. Surf City, NC took quite a beating from the high surf, high tides, and extreme amounts of rainfall. We documented some of the flooding and erosion during this event. When the sun finally came back out a few days later we shot this 4K video (below) showing what damage was done by flying over Surf City, NC. In the first 2 or so minutes of the video we did a 2x time lapse speeding it up. After that we slowed it down to normal speed so you can really see the detail. Just about all of the dunes and beach accesses have been damaged during this storm. There were even someold home foundations from Hurricane Fran back in 1996 that have surfaced on the beach. The sand has been washed down the beach so much that you can even see remains of the 1919 ship wreck of the William H. Sumner in the video - (6:05). The video is about 10 minutes long but if you are a oceanfront homeowner or visit  Surf City often you may want to watch. Enjoy!!!
